A comprehensive architectural and interior design project for a modern barn

House CZ

2012 Kobylanka

House CZ | A single-family home in Kobylanka near Szczecin, designed for a family with children. The building’s form draws on the archetype of a rural barn—compact, energy-efficient, with an elongated shape and a gable roof. The uniform cladding of the longer exterior walls and roof slopes with dark-gray fiber-cement tiles is contrasted with white gable walls, emphasizing the building’s structural composition. A dynamic recess in the south wall creates a covered terrace, and the building’s distinct silhouette, devoid of superfluous details, marks the boundary between contemporary architecture and typical suburban development.

The interior is divided into living, work, and sleeping areas—separate for parents and children. The heart of the home is a double-height living room connected to the common area on the upper floor. A wooden staircase with distinctive undercut stringers serves as the axis linking both levels, concealing storage space beneath its cast-in-place structure. The kitchen, open to the living room, forms a cohesive whole with it.

The interior design was created with the owners’ personalities in mind—landscape garden designers and avid travelers. Raw, natural materials were used: open-pored travertine in the entryway and kitchen, and oiled oak planks in the living room. The bathroom, finished with polished black marble slabs featuring white veining, evokes an oriental bathhouse—a direct reference to the owners’ distant travels.

The project was conceived as a comprehensive concept encompassing architecture, interior design, and landscaping. Completed in 2012, as one of the studio’s early projects, it stood out distinctly from the surrounding suburban manor-style buildings and quickly attracted the attention of international media, including the Italian edition of Elle Decoration and ArchDaily.
