Comprehensive design and renovation of a penthouse with a sea view

BL apartment

2024–2025, Świnoujście

Apartment BL | This two-level apartment on the top floor of a high-rise building, featuring a terrace with a view of the Baltic Sea, was designed by ANNA THUROW Architecture and Interiors. The interior was designed as a comfortable living space for two residents. The character of the design is defined by the exposed concrete ceiling, which gives the space a distinct, raw character and serves as the starting point for further design decisions.

The apartment’s layout has been completely redesigned. The demolition of a significant portion of the walls allowed for the creation of an open living area and the design of a new, enlarged bathroom flooded with natural light through the installation of a skylight. The upper floor, directly connected to the terrace, has been expanded to include a small kitchen, allowing for independent use of this part of the apartment.

The project’s material palette is based on a combination of natural, raw, and distinctly textured materials. Structural concrete is paired with hand-oxidized steel used in the built-in furniture and the warmth of natural wood. In keeping with the built-in furniture, wide, brushed oak planks were used for the floors, maintaining material consistency throughout the space.

Natural stone—Perla Santana quartzite—was used in the bathroom and kitchen; its muted colors and subtle texture enhance the serene atmosphere of the interior. The look is complemented by light, soft upholstery and bolder accents, such as a coffee table made of charred and oiled wood.

The austerity of the materials used is balanced by the rounded forms of the freestanding furniture, carefully designed signature lighting, and select vintage furnishings, including a table and chairs from the 1950s designed by Hans Olsen for Frem Røjle. Decorative Vibia fixtures suspended from fabric straps organize the perception of the space and highlight the ceiling’s unconventional geometry, introducing a sense of visual lightness.

The space is complemented by colorful works by young Polish artists, which add an extra, more personal touch to the interior.
