Comprehensive interior design and renovation of a large apartment in the Podzamcze district of Szczecin

2024, Szczecin

AR Apartment | The interior of a 100-square-meter apartment on Plac Sienny in Szczecin’s Podzamcze district, designed as an urban retreat for the owner, who works in the IT industry. The somewhat somber atmosphere of the Hanseatic architecture of the Old Town—a district of Szczecin being rebuilt from scratch based on its original urban layout—served as the starting point for the entire project.

The original developer layout, consisting of four rooms and three smaller spaces, has been completely transformed. The partition walls separating the narrow living room from the kitchen were removed, and the bathroom was enlarged and brightened through the use of glass with variable transparency—a modern solution that allowed both spaces to function as a visually cohesive whole while maintaining the full privacy of the bathing area.

The material palette was shaped by the site’s historical context. Textured plaster on the walls and ceilings is paired with dark smoked oak veneer on the cabinetry and walls, wide oiled oak planks on the floor, and brushed and hammered Nero Assoluto granite on the kitchen island and fireplace surround. A similar material language appears in the bathroom—the consistency of the finishes makes the spaces blend seamlessly. The slatted cladding of the bedroom wardrobe, concealing storage space, echoes the rhythm of the facade of the neighboring Szczecin Philharmonic and the detail of the brick gables of Hanseatic Gothic townhouses. Black light fixtures and leather accents introduce a subtle industrial touch. A designer lamp by Flos hangs above the kitchen island and dining table—equipped with a distinctive leather strap, it serves as one of the interior’s most striking accents.

The custom furniture was designed specifically for this project—bedside tables, a porcelain stoneware sink, and a desk composed of planes and volumes—and tailored to the owner’s specific mobility needs, as he works primarily remotely. Alongside materials referencing history, a voice-controlled smart home system was installed. The interior is filled with numerous works by Polish artists, some of which were created specifically for this project. Their selection was entrusted to the architects—works by Bartłomiej Chwilczyński, Agata Hećman, and Andrzej Pietsch now hang on the walls.
