A comprehensive interior design project for a historic home
WK House
2022, Szczecin
WK House | In a pre-war villa located in one of Szczecin’s historic districts, architects from the ANNA THUROW Architecture and Interiors studio designed a space that combines contemporary functionality with respect for the building’s existing architecture. The goal of the project was to create a space for everyday living—comfortable and modern, yet consciously rooted in the house’s historical context.
When work began, the building was in a shell condition—the interiors were completely stripped of their historical finishes. The brick structure of the walls was exposed, and during earlier construction work, a new reinforced concrete ceiling had been installed, which the architects decided to retain—its raw character serving as a clear testament to the building’s structure and a starting point for the new interior design.
The new layout of the living area is centered around a stone fireplace, which has become the focal point of the interior and integrates several functions—a fireplace, a TV, and a bookshelf. The living room, dining room, and kitchen are situated around it, creating a cohesive, open living space. The natural materials used include primarily oiled oak flooring, brushed veneers on the walls, quartzite on the island and the fireplace with a distinctive grain, textured plaster, and soft fabrics in a subdued color palette.
A key element of the design was to highlight the building’s distinctive architectural features. The oval bay windows, a prominent feature of the villa’s structure, were accentuated by the addition of freestanding semi-circular furniture, which helps maintain the clarity of the interior’s form and the natural rhythm of the space.
The design incorporates solutions that allow for the discreet integration of modern technology. The sound system and home theater system are concealed within the built-in furniture, helping to maintain visual order and the cohesion of the interior design.
The design is complemented by carefully crafted details, including a custom-made glass staircase railing, original sinks, and furniture custom-made specifically for this project. These elements reflect the studio’s comprehensive design approach, which is based on meticulous attention to materials, details, and the context of the space. The whole is complemented by art.
