Comprehensive interior design project for an apartment in a townhouse

MJ Apartment

2023, Szczecin

MJ Apartment | The interiors of this apartment are located in a pre-war tenement building in the center of Szczecin. This spacious 140-square-meter apartment, which had been divided into three smaller units in the post-war years, has regained its clear enfilade layout and original spatial logic thanks to the changes implemented by the architects. The project aimed to restore the historical character of the interiors while adapting them to the contemporary lifestyle of the owners, who have combined the functions of a home and an editorial office in this space.

A key objective of the project was to preserve and restore the most significant elements that reflect the apartment’s history: the original door and window frames, the stucco work, and the wooden parquet flooring. Against this classic backdrop, new elements with a minimalist, understated design were introduced, creating a harmonious balance between early 20th-century architecture and contemporary design language.

The heart of the apartment is the open-concept kitchen and living room, designed as a shared living and working space. Thanks to contemporary design solutions, the typical feel of a kitchen has been avoided, allowing both spaces to function as a unified whole. The work area is separated by historic double doors, which allow it to be integrated with the living space when needed.

The materials were selected to strike a balance between the apartment’s classic character and the new furnishings. Large-format porcelain tiles in the bathrooms, natural, restored wood on the floors, and a monochromatic color palette create a serene backdrop for the residents’ daily lives and the editorial team’s work.

Polish contemporary art plays a significant role in the interior design. Oskar Zięta’s mirrored sculptures, Szymon Brodziak’s photographs, and Agata Hećman’s paintings engage in a dialogue with the apartment’s historic architecture, emphasizing its graphic, minimalist character.
